I am from the suburbs of Chicago but there are still many things I have yet to see or do in Chicago. So every time Sherman & I go to Plainfield to visit my family, we try to cross 1-2 things off my list of Places to See Before You Die. Here are some pictures from our recent visits.
DECEMBER 2010
"The Bean" in Millennium Park
This sculpture is actually called Cloud Gate but NO ONE in Chicago calls it that. Hard to believe it but Millennium Park opened in 2004 (though they started working on it in 1998). The Bean was not finished in time for the opening ceremony but was briefly unveiled and then concealed again until its completion in 2006. This sculpture is now one of the most popular sights in Chicago (recently featured in the movie "Source Code").
FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOME
http://www.gowright.org/

This home served as Frank Lloyd Wright's main residency and workplace for the first 20 years of his career. Needless to say, the house is amazing. The kid's playroom is breathtaking. Large windows and a tall ceiling gave the kids lots of light. And the balcony and built-in piano made for the perfect environment for the kids to put on plays.
It's hard to believe the house was eventually turned into an apartment complex. The home was sectioned off into 6 different apartment units. The house is pretty sweet but it is hard to imagine how it was split into 6 sections (particularly when we only saw 1 bathroom in the entire house). In the mid 70s the house was declared a National Landmark and the house has since been restored to its 1909 appearance.

FUN FACTS:
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Guggenheim Museum in NY
Lincoln Logs were invented in 1916 by Frank's son John L. Wright
Lincoln Logs were not named after Abraham Lincoln, but rather Frank Lloyd Wright
(whose given middle name was Lincoln)
Frank L. Wright designed over 400 built structures

Another "Prairie Style" Home - designed by FLW
SUPERDAWG

Not only does Superdawg have the best dang hot dogs but they also provide an extremely satisfying dining experience. When you pull in you can either pull up to one of the individual car ports (where you order via speaker and the food is brought to you on a tray so you can eat in your car), you can pull into the regular drive-thru or park and go inside.

When ordering your hot dog, it comes in a little box with a small side of fries thrown on top. They refuse to put ketchup on their hot dogs. If that's how you want it, you need to add the ketchup yourself. Superdawg tells you how to eat their food and they do not advise you to deviate from their recommendations!
